Clover POS by business type

Clover POS for Smoke Shops and Tobacco Stores

Clover POS for smoke shops and tobacco stores, set up by Stratamize: underwriting prep, age verification, scan data, carton and pack inventory, loyalty.

Most owners who land here are asking one question: will a smoke shop get a Clover system and a merchant account that stays open, or is this another provider that boards the store and shuts it down later? Clover itself is the easy part; tobacco stores run on it every day. The merchant account behind it is where the real review happens, and most Clover resellers do not talk about it.

Stratamize works with businesses that underwriting reviews more closely, and smoke shops are one of them. We go through your product mix before anything is submitted, prepare the application around what you actually sell, and set Clover up for what a tobacco counter needs: age checks on every restricted item, inventory by brand and strength, cartons and packs sold from the same stock. If you also sell vape products, CBD or kratom, read that question below before you call.

What we set up

  • Review your product mix, sales channels and age-check routine before the application is submitted.
  • Open the merchant account and connect it to your Clover devices.
  • Build the catalog by brand, size and strength, with cartons and packs counted from the same stock.
  • Set the age-restricted flag on every tobacco item and add an ID-scanning app if you need or want one.
  • Connect a scan-data app for any manufacturer program you take part in.
  • Set up loyalty, promotions and the cash discount if they fit your store.
  • Train your staff on the age prompt, returns and the end-of-day count, and stay on as the first call after go-live.

What smoke shop owners ask about Clover

Can a smoke shop get approved for Clover, and what does underwriting actually look at?

Clover is the point of sale; nobody is turned away from Clover for selling tobacco. The review is on the merchant account behind it, and it looks at the specific products you sell, how you sell them (counter only, or online and shipped), how you check age at the register and whether anything on the shelf is handled differently from plain tobacco. Eligibility depends on those details and on the underwriting review; no category label guarantees acceptance, and we will not tell you otherwise.

Our job is to prepare the file so the review sees the business you actually run: an accurate product list, your age-check routine, your sales channels and your processing history if you have one. Ask us how reserves and holds would work in your case; we would rather explain that before you sign than after.

Does Clover have age verification built in, or do we need an app for ID scanning?

Both are true. Clover lets you mark items as age-restricted, so when a cashier rings up a pack or a cigar the register stops and asks them to confirm the customer's age before the sale continues. That is the native tool, and we set it on every restricted item in your catalog.

Scanning the barcode on a driver's license to read the birth date is a separate step, and on Clover it comes from an app in the Clover App Market rather than the base software. Some states now require the ID to be scanned rather than looked at, and many stores want it anyway because it takes the judgment call away from a new hire. Tell us your state and whether you want scanning; we will set up the app that fits and show you it working before go-live.

Can Clover report tobacco scan data for the manufacturer rebate programs?

Scan-data programs pay the store for reporting item-level sales back to the manufacturer, and competitors like to point out that Clover does not do this on its own. That is accurate: the base Clover software does not produce scan-data files; the path on Clover is an App Market app built for it. Whether your program is covered by one of those apps is a question to put to us before you commit, not after. Tell us which programs you take part in and we will say plainly what the setup looks like and what it costs.

How does Clover handle inventory by brand, flavor, strength, carton and pack?

A tobacco catalog is wide rather than deep: one brand comes in several lengths and strengths, each sells by the pack and by the carton, and the carton has to come out of the same count as the packs. Clover tracks inventory with variants and low-stock alerts, and we build the catalog so each product carries brand, size and strength as variants instead of a hundred near-identical items.

Carton-to-pack breakdown, expiration dates and lot tracking are where the detail matters; some of that is native to Clover's inventory and some is better handled with an inventory app from the App Market. Bring your count sheet or a distributor invoice to the first call and we will tell you which is which before you buy anything.

We also sell vapes, and some CBD and kratom. Does that change anything?

Yes, and it is the most important thing to tell us before an application goes in. Vape and e-liquid products, CBD and kratom are each reviewed differently from cigarettes and cigars, and an application that calls the store a tobacco shop while the shelves say otherwise is the fastest route to the account closure owners fear. We do not publish a blanket answer on whether vape, CBD or kratom shops are accepted; the honest answer depends on the products and on a written underwriting position, not a sales pitch. Describe the full product mix on the first call and we will tell you what we can confirm and what we cannot.

Can we run loyalty and mix-and-match deals on Clover?

Clover has its own rewards program, and the App Market includes loyalty apps that support tobacco and vape merchants specifically, which matters because some general loyalty platforms exclude the category. Simple mix-and-match deals are built as discounts and item rules in Clover; the more involved the promotion, the more likely it belongs in an app. Tell us which deals you run and we will show you how each one rings up.

We take a lot of cash. How does Clover fit a cash-heavy counter?

Clover runs a cash drawer, cash tenders and end-of-day cash reports the same way it runs cards, so a mostly-cash counter still gets a full record of what sold and when, which is what you want when the shelf does not match the count. A cash discount, 3.5% off for cash, is available if it fits your store. We put the pricing in writing before you sign: processing rates, the software plan and the hardware, with nothing added later that you did not see up front.

Competitors say Clover is a bad fit for smoke shops. Is that true?

The usual claims are that Clover needs third-party apps for ID scanning and scan data, and that its high-risk processing is weak. The first part is accurate, and we say so above: those functions come from the App Market, and the cost of the apps belongs in your quote. The second part confuses the point of sale with the merchant account, which is where a smoke shop succeeds or fails and where our work happens before you ever see a Clover screen. Where a vertical tobacco system does more out of the box, we will say so.

How long does setup take, and what does it cost?

Approvals usually come back within hours, three days at most. After approval we build the catalog with you, set the age-restricted flags, add the ID-scanning and scan-data apps if you want them, place the hardware and train your staff. A deep humidor or several hundred tobacco variants takes longer than a small counter, because we test the catalog before go-live rather than leaving gaps for your cashier to find. On cost, ask us for a quote; it is the fastest way to see real numbers for your volume.
