Buying Clover from a reseller: what to ask before you sign

The device is the easy part. Ask who sets up the merchant account, how the price is quoted, who installs it and who you call when something breaks.

Clover devices look the same wherever you buy them. What changes is everything around the device: the merchant account behind it, how the price is put together, who sets it up and who answers the phone later. These are the questions we would ask in your place.

Who sets up the merchant account?

Use of Clover requires a merchant processing agreement. That account is what settles your card sales to your bank, and its pricing is where most of your cost lives over time. Ask whether the seller sets up that account with the devices, or sells you hardware and leaves the account to someone else.

As a registered ISO, we set up the merchant account with your Clover, so the devices and the payments come from one place.

How is the price quoted?

A Clover setup has four parts: the devices, the monthly Clover software plan, the processing on each card sale, and the setup itself. A quote that covers only one of them is hard to compare. Ask for all four together, with the processing model named: interchange-plus, tiered or flat rate.

Our guide to what Clover costs walks through each part.

Who installs it, and who trains your staff?

A Clover that arrives in a box still needs your menu or inventory loaded, taxes and tips set, printers and cash drawers connected, and a test sale run before you open. Ask who does that work, where, and when.

Our team installs on site in Coweta County and metro Atlanta: we load your items, run a live sale and a refund, and train your staff on the devices you bought. Anywhere else in the U.S., we ship the devices and set them up with your team by phone.

What happens to the cash discount?

If you want to offer a lower price to customers who pay cash, ask how it is set up. Our program is 3.5% off for cash, in person only: your posted price is the card price, and customers who pay cash get the discount on their receipt. See how the cash discount works.

Who handles card data?

Card numbers should go into the Clover device or the processor's secure hosted forms, never into a spreadsheet or an email. Ask how the seller handles it. We never handle raw card numbers.

Already have a Clover?

Clover devices bought through another provider are a special case; whether they can move depends on who you have them with and what your agreement says. Bring your current agreement and your last statement to the conversation.

Tell us how you sell. We recommend the devices, quote them with the plan and your processing, and set it all up with you. Compare Clover devices first if you want to look around, or call our team at (770) 629-0928.
