Closing the register is what turns a shift's cash into a number you can check. Do it once, at the end, on the device standing at that till.
Open Registers in the sidebar and find the register marked Open.
Count and close
- Tap Close & reconcile.
- Count the physical drawer into the denomination boxes — $100 down to pennies, and the roll buttons for quarter, dime, nickel and penny rolls. The running total fills the Counted cash field.
- If you would rather type a total, type it. A Use counted total ($…) link appears if you want to snap the field back to what you counted.
- Tap Reconcile & close.
Count what is physically in the drawer, including the float you started with. Not the takings — the whole drawer.
Reading the result
A line appears on the register card:
Expected $412.50 · Counted $412.50 · Balanced
or
Expected $412.50 · Counted $408.00 · Off by -$4.50
A negative figure is short, a positive one is over.
Expected is worked out as:
opening float + cash taken in sales at this register during the session + cash you added − cash you dropped
What expected does not know about
Cash refunds. Money handed back to a customer during the shift is not taken off the expected figure. Refund $20 in cash and the drawer counts $20 short at close, even though nothing is missing.
Until that is fixed: note the cash refunds you took, and check them against the shortfall before you go looking for missing money. The refunds themselves are recorded correctly — Sales History has each one — it is only this figure that does not know about them.
The closing slip
The slip is offered for printing the moment the close succeeds. It carries the opening float, cash sales, each pay-in and cash drop with its reason, how many times the drawer was recorded as opened without a sale, and the expected, counted and over/short figures.
Print it before you leave the page. A Closing slip button stays on the card to reprint it, but only until the page is reloaded. After a refresh there is no way back to that slip from this screen.
What the close does not cover
A register session tracks cash only. There are no card totals and no store-credit totals on the close, and there is nothing here to reconcile a card batch against.
