Two places to look at the end of the day: the Dashboard for a glance, and Reports for a figure you are going to write down.
The Dashboard tiles
Open Dashboard. Four tiles across the top:
| Tile | What it is |
|---|---|
| Today's Sales | Everything taken today, including tax and tips, compared with last week. |
| Orders Today | How many sales, compared with last month. |
| Avg Order Value | Today's total divided by today's count. |
| This Week Sales | This week so far, against the week before. |
Below them: this week against last week as a chart, your ten most recent sales, your top sellers this week, and low-stock warnings.
The four tiles cover all your locations together. The low-stock list is for the location you have selected. Do not read a tile as one store's takings if you have more than one.
The reports
Open Reports, pick a report on the left, set the dates, and generate. Then Export CSV, or Print / Save PDF for something to file.
Two are worth knowing at close:
Sales Summary — gross sales, discounts, tax collected, net sales, the transaction count, the average sale, and a day-by-day breakdown.
Sales Tax Report — gross sales, non-taxable, taxable base, total tax collected, refunds in the period, net sales and net tax, then a table of tax collected broken down by each rate that collected it. This is the one to file from.
Also on the list: Sales by Employee, Sales by Category, Top Products, Top Customers, Hourly Sales Distribution and Inventory Valuation.
Which one is right about returns
The Sales Tax Report is the only report that subtracts refunds. It shows refunds for the period as their own line and gives you net sales and net tax after them.
Everything else — the Dashboard tiles and the Sales Summary report — handles returns badly, in two different ways:
- A sale that was refunded in full disappears from the figures entirely, including the tax it collected.
- A sale that was refunded in part stays in at its original amount. The refund is not subtracted at all.
So on a day with returns, the Dashboard and the Sales Summary both overstate what you took.
The workaround: on any day with returns, read Net sales and Net tax off the Sales Tax Report. Use the Dashboard for a feel for the day, not for a number you are going to act on.
Cash is checked separately
None of this reconciles your drawer. That is the closing slip — see Count and close the drawer. And remember that a cash refund does not show up in the expected-cash figure there either.
