Take payment

Cash and the change figure you read before you complete it, paying from a customer's store-credit balance, splitting a sale across more than one tender, and taking a tip.

Menus and available actions depend on your role and enabled services. In the local demos, use sample records only; no real payments or messages are sent.

Tap Charge $… at the bottom of the cart, or press F2. The payment window opens on the tender list.

What is on the tender list

  • Cash — always there.
  • Card — only when this register has a working terminal. See Take a card payment on the terminal.
  • Split Payment — always there.
  • Manual Card (Keyed) and any saved cards — only when keyed card entry is switched on for your account and you are a manager.
  • Open a tab — restaurant tabs only.

If your store has no terminal and no keyed card entry, there is no card tender at all. Cash, store credit and splits of those are what you have. That is a real limit, not a setting you have missed.

Cash

  1. Tap Cash.
  2. Type what the customer handed you, or tap the +$100 / +$50 / +$20 / +$10 / +$5 / +$1 buttons, or tap Exact Amount ($…).
  3. The panel shows Change Due in green once you have enough, or Still Owed in red while you are short.
  4. Tap Complete Cash Payment.

Read Change Due before you tap Complete Cash Payment. That figure is what you hand back, and it is on the cash panel only — the sale-complete screen does not repeat it.

Store credit

Store credit is not an entry on the tender list. It is a green Wallet Balance panel that sits above the list, and you set it before you pick a tender.

  1. Attach the customer first — see Put the sale on a customer's account. Their balance shows next to their name in the cart.
  2. Tap Charge $…. The Wallet Balance panel is at the top of the payment window with their balance on the right.
  3. Type the amount to take off their balance, or tap Use All.
  4. Then tap Cash and take whatever is left the normal way.

The panel only appears when the balance is above zero, and only on the tender list — once you are in the cash view it is out of sight, so set it first.

The balance is checked and taken at the moment the sale records, so the same credit cannot be spent on two registers at once. If the customer does not have enough, the sale stops and tells you both figures:

Insufficient wallet balance: requested 45.00 but available 12.50

Lower the amount and take the rest another way.

Store credit shows as its own line on the sale-complete panel, so you can see what came off the balance.

Paying any part of a sale with store credit means the sale is not all-cash, so cash pricing does not apply to it.

Split the payment

Tap Split Payment to pay one sale with more than one tender. Add a leg for each, set its amount, and the panel tracks what is still unallocated. The legs have to add up exactly before the sale can be completed.

A card leg is charged on the terminal for its own amount, one leg at a time. While a card leg is live:

  • the split editor is locked;
  • every other tender is withdrawn, and the payment window says "A card on this split was charged and this sale is not recorded yet. Finish the split — do NOT take another payment or run the card again."

Finish the split. Do not close the window and start again — that abandons a charge that has already taken money.

If a card leg declines, deal with it on that leg: Try another card or Take as cash. Do not press Complete again.

Tips

A tip box appears above the tender list for restaurant and service businesses, with 15%, 18%, 20% and 25% presets and a custom amount. Retail does not show it.

Tips are added on top of the total and are never refunded by a return.

If payment is refused

Every refusal keeps your cart. Nothing is lost — fix what it asks for and take payment again. See Messages at checkout and what to do.
