There are two ways money comes off a sale. You apply the first. The second applies itself when the customer pays cash.
Discount the cart
- With items in the cart, tap Add Discount under the item list.
- Choose % or $.
- Type the amount and tap Apply.
The cart now shows a Discount line in the totals, and the button reads Discount Applied. Tap Remove Discount to take it off.
A percentage comes off the subtotal. A dollar amount comes off the subtotal too, and is capped at it — you cannot discount a cart below zero.
Tax is worked out on what is left after the discount, not on the original subtotal.
The discount covers the whole cart. There is no way to discount one line, and no approval step — anyone who can ring a sale can apply one.
Cash pricing
If your account has cash pricing switched on and you have set a percentage in the Payments card under Admin → General, your listed prices are your card prices, and a sale paid entirely in cash gets that percentage off.
You do not do anything for this. Open payment, choose Cash, and the cash view shows the lower total. Exact Amount and the change calculation both use it.
The order it is worked out in:
- Start from the subtotal.
- Take off your cart discount, if there is one.
- Take the cash-pricing percentage off what is left.
- Work out tax on that.
- Add any tip.
Because tax comes after, the customer saves tax on the discount as well.
When cash pricing does not apply
It applies only when every part of the payment is cash. The moment any of these is in the sale, the customer pays the listed price:
- any card amount, on the terminal or keyed;
- any store credit;
- a split that mixes cash with anything else.
Store credit counts as not-cash, so a customer paying part on their balance and the rest in notes pays the listed price on the whole sale.
If you don't see it
Open Admin → General and find the Payments card. If it reads:
Not enabled for your store. Contact Stratamize to turn on cash discounting. The listed price is the card price; cash customers get a % off.
then cash pricing is not switched on for your account. Only Stratamize can turn it on — email support@stratamize.com. See What we set up for you.
If instead the card shows a Cash Discount (%) field, cash pricing is on for you. A value of 0 means it is set to take nothing off — type a percentage and tap Save Settings.
The screen is not the last word
Every discount is worked out again on the server when you take payment, from your saved settings and the product records. The discount and the rounding on the payment screen are built to match the server to the cent.
Tax is the exception. The sale screen applies your store's one default rate to the whole cart. The server charges tax per product — using any rate you have assigned to that product, and charging nothing on a product marked tax-exempt. So if you use more than one tax rate, or you have any tax-exempt products, the total on screen and the total charged will not agree, and the server's figure is the one charged.
That has a consequence at the counter: the cash you type in is measured against the server's total, not the one on screen. If the server's total is higher, the sale is refused with "Payment insufficient: … cash + … card + … wallet < … total" for an amount that looked exactly right. Take the payment again for the amount the message names. See Messages at checkout and what to do.
