A serialized item is returned the same way as anything else, with one extra step before it can be sold again.
Take the return
Open the sale and tap Refund / Return — see Refund one line or the whole sale.
The serialized line looks slightly different: its stock checkbox is fixed off and reads Serialized — returns via the serial ledger. That is correct. You do not choose whether the unit comes back; it always does, as a unit rather than as a quantity.
Set the quantity, add a reason, and tap Refund selected. The money is refunded exactly as on any other line.
Which unit comes back
If the sale had two of the same product and you return one, the app takes back the earlier of the two units — the one entered into stock first. You cannot pick which. If the specific unit matters to you, check the serial numbers on that sale before you take the return.
It does not go straight back on the shelf
The returned unit is marked Returned, not In stock. Your on-hand count does not go up, and the unit cannot be sold, until someone re-shelves it. That is deliberate — a returned unit usually needs checking first.
To put it back:
- Open Products and find the product.
- Open its Inventory tab and scroll to Serial numbers.
- Filter the list to Returned.
- Find the unit and use its re-shelve control — Re-shelve to in-stock.
The unit becomes In stock and the on-hand count goes up by one.
If the unit is not going back on sale — damaged, written off — use the mark-removed control on the same row instead. That keeps it out of stock without losing the record.
What is recorded
The unit's row shows it as Returned, with the time of the change, and it still links to the sale it went out on. Nothing records who brought it back beyond that sale.
