Read this first: the age flag is a reminder for your cashier, and nothing else. It does not stop a sale, does not ask for a date of birth, does not scan an ID, and leaves no record on the sale that anyone checked. Your ID policy is entirely manual, and this page exists so you know exactly where the software stops.
Setting the flag
- Open Products and click the product.
- Go to the Categorization tab.
- Under Age Restriction, choose None, 18+ or 21+.
- Save.
Those three are the only choices. The server rejects the save if it is sent anything else, and a spreadsheet import row carrying an unrecognised value is stored as None rather than as a broken product.
You can set the flag while creating a product too — the same three buttons are on the Categorization tab of the new-product form.
What the flag does
One thing: a small red 18+ or 21+ badge is drawn in the top-left corner of the product's tile on the register, and next to each option in the size / flavour picker if the product has variants.
That is the whole behaviour. The badge is there so a cashier looking at the screen has a prompt to look up and ask.
What the flag does not do
- Nothing happens at checkout. Adding an 18+ or 21+ item to the cart, taking payment and printing the receipt are identical to any other item. There is no prompt, no confirmation, no manager override.
- No date of birth is captured, and no ID is scanned. The register never asks for either.
- Nothing is recorded on the sale. The completed sale has no field saying an ID was checked or who checked it, and the receipt prints nothing. If you are ever asked to prove you carded someone, this system cannot help you.
- There is no report. No report filters or counts age-restricted sales.
- There is no store-wide setting. You cannot make the system require an ID check; the setting does not exist.
- The badge is on the tile, not on the cart. Once the line is in the cart the badge is no longer on screen, so the cashier's prompt is at the moment of adding the item, not at the moment of payment.
What this means for how you run the store
Treat the badge the way you would treat a sticker on a shelf: it helps a new cashier notice, and it is not a control. Carding, refusing a sale, and any log you have to keep are staff procedure and paper, exactly as they were before you had a POS.
If you need a system that blocks the sale and records the check, this one does not do it yet. That is a real gap and it is better that you plan around it than discover it during an inspection.
