Stratamize POS register screen ringing up a four-item cart with quantity steppers, 8.9% tax math, and a $121.97 charge button

What “just 2.6% + 15¢” actually costs you.

Flat-rate processing sounds simple until you do the multiplication. A store running $40,000/month in card volume at Square’s free-plan in-person rate (2.6% + 15¢, as published July 2026) pays roughly $1,000–$1,200 every month in processing — $12,000+ a year — regardless of what the cards actually cost to process. And the headline rates have been moving up, not down: Square raised its in-person fixed fee from 10¢ to 15¢ in late 2025, and its free-plan online rate from 2.9% to 3.3% + 30¢ on January 13, 2026.

We do it the older, more honest way: interchange-plus processing quoted for your volume and your vertical, in writing, before you sign — you pay the true card cost plus a transparent markup, not a padded flat rate. ACH runs a flat 1.5%. Prefer to pay nothing on cards? Our optional zero-fees (surcharge) program passes the card cost to the card, with no long-term contract and no setup fee. Software is month-to-month with no cancellation fee and no setup fee on invoicing. Send us last month’s statement and we’ll show you the line-by-line difference. You keep the analysis even if you never switch.

The fund-hold story (Square)

The complaint that shows up again and again about aggregator processing isn’t the rate — it’s the freeze. BBB complaints and 2026 local-news investigations document Square sellers waiting through 90–180 day rolling reserves, with support “unable to take further actions.” That’s the structural risk of being a sub-merchant on someone else’s master account. Stratamize merchants are underwritten up front for a dedicated account in their own name — the boring, old-fashioned way that doesn’t get “re-risked” overnight.

The contract story (Toast / Clover)

Toast’s standard contract runs two years, auto-renews, and charges the remaining balance if you leave early — owners report $1,000+ termination bills. Clover’s reseller channel commonly writes 36–48 month terms with non-cancelable hardware leases, and the hardware is useless with any other processor. Our answer is simpler: month-to-month, and your hardware is commodity PAX gear plus whatever tablet you already own. If we stop earning your business, leaving is cheap. That’s on purpose — it keeps the risk on us.

The missing number (our rates)

You’ll notice we don’t publish a Stratamize rate table. That’s not evasion — it’s the point. Flat published rates mean the low-volume shop subsidizes the high-volume one. Your quote is written for your volume and your vertical, and you see it before you sign anything. Bring your last two processing statements to the demo and we’ll put your real all-in cost next to the July 2026 published rates above, line by line.

Frequently asked questions

No. Month-to-month, cancel anytime, no cancellation fee, and no setup fee on invoicing. We keep the risk on our side of the table — if we stop earning your business, leaving is easy.

The whole bill is two lines: the flat software subscription, and a card-processing rate quoted in writing for your volume before you sign. No per-register fees, no per-employee fees, no statement surprises. If a line item ever appears that we didn’t quote, show us and we’ll remove it.

Interchange-plus — you pay the true card cost plus a transparent markup, quoted for your volume and vertical in writing before you commit. ACH runs a flat 1.5%. Prefer to pay nothing on cards? Our optional zero-fees (surcharge) program passes the card cost to the card, with no long-term contract and no setup fee. Flat-rate processors charge every shop the same padded number; the free rate review will show you the difference using your own statement.

Any device with a browser — tablet, phone, or PC — plus a PAX payment terminal per register. Terminals ship pre-configured. There are no proprietary registers to buy, and nothing that becomes a paperweight if you ever leave.

Your plan flexes month to month — Growth and Scale cover multiple locations, and you can change tiers whenever your footprint changes. Open a store and provisioning is fast: your new location gets its own private database and address, with your catalog ready to go. Close one and it simply drops out the next month.

It exports free, any day. Your store runs in its own private database — your products, customers, and sales history are never mixed with anyone else’s, and “give me my data” is a button, not a negotiation.

Two ways to start — pick the one that fits.
